There are always going to be times when you need a bit of support from the people closest to you. No matter how strong you may appear, or how ‘in control’ you want those around you to believe that you are, everyone needs some support from time to time. When you have a family member who is a caregiver, make sure that you give them the emotional support that they need, and anything else that might make their life a bit easier.
What Are Some Things that You Can Do to Support the Caregiver?
There are many things that we can all do to support the home care provider. Some of the ways that offer the most support are listed here.
1. Be willing to listen. Sometimes, all that someone needs is to know that there are other people who are willing to listen. It can be tough to take care of a family member, and it can be even tougher when they feel as though no one is listening, or cares about them.
Take the time to listen. Even if they aren’t reaching out to you directly, you can still offer them support by calling them up from time to time to see how they are handling things. Don’t offer unwanted advice, though. Just listen.
2. Avoid talking about yourself. There are times when it’s fine to talk about yourself or to tell stories about other people that you know who were caregivers for their family, but when you have a family member who has taken on this role, it’s about them.
Learn to put them first and avoid going on and on about yourself and all of the fun things that you’re doing at the moment. If they ask, then it’s fine to talk about you, but keep it brief and make them feel as though they are more important.
3. Offer to help with whatever you can. You might not think that there’s anything you can do for the caregiver, especially if you live a long distance away, but you might be surprised. The caregiver might tell you that you could call your elderly family member once in a while, just to talk.
It could make all the difference in the world to them, and you.
Having a family member be a caregiver can be challenging for the patient and the caregiver. When you’re there for them and offer support, it can be the difference between a positive experience and one filled with challenges.
